B.C. introducing legislative amendments to increase wood fibre supply

Legislative changes will increase fibre supply by about 800,000 cubic metres, expand contract types, and support small and medium mills while strengthening First Nations partnerships.

  • On Monday, the government announced legislative amendments to the Forest Act and Forest and Range Practices Act to strengthen BC Timber Sales and expand access to fibre for loggers, contractors, and First Nations.
  • The provincial forestry industry has faced a "critical shortage" of timber, with supply falling more than 40 per cent since 2018 and the province operating at roughly 60 per cent of the sustainable harvest level set by the Independent Chief Forester.
  • These changes will allow BCTS to auction contracts for forestry thinning and damaged timber salvage, expected to increase fibre supply by approximately 800,000 cubic metres, with expanded salvage licences delivering up to an additional 500,000 cubic metres.
  • Forests Minister Ravi Parmar said the changes ensure a "steady stream of timber" for mill workers, while Jeff Bromley, wood council chair with the United Steelworkers, noted the announcement improves fibre availability at the coast and in Prince George.
  • BCTS will now manage timber sale licences through their full rotation, covering initial harvesting, replanting, and long-term stewardship to strengthen fibre availability and investment certainty for the forestry sector.
