B.C. father and son on 7,500-km cross-Canada ride for nurses’ mental health
The pair have raised $10,673 so far for the Canadian Nurses Foundation's Healing Healthcare campaign, with the ride inspired by Andy Turnbull's mother.
- On May 8, Dr. Andrew Turnbull, a former White Rock Baptist Church pastor, and his son Judah set out from Victoria on a cross-Canada cycling journey to raise $15,000 for nurses' mental health.
- Inspired by his mother Debby, a nurse living with mental illness for over two decades following a work injury, Andy recognized that such challenges can strip nurses of their professional identity and separate them from careers they love.
- The ride fulfills a 30-year dream for Andy, who first envisioned crossing Canada at 19 after surviving a near-fatal snowboarding accident on Mount Baker; Judah's elite rowing background provided a strong fitness base for the demanding trek.
- Public response has been 'really touching and stirring,' with Andy noting the journey became 'something bigger' than a father-son adventure. His younger brother Carl said from White Rock the family is 'incredibly grateful for everyone's support.'
- Aiming for St. Johns, Newfoundland, on July 4, the pair averages 110 kilometres daily across 7,500 kilometres of terrain including Alberta's Badlands. In-laws Glen and Debbie support the effort by hauling camping gear by van.
