B.C. Conservative leader Doerkson dumps candidate Joachim Agou in racism row
Lorne Doerkson said 1 candidate was removed after the NDP highlighted posts the party called racist, including comments about protesters and Pakistan.
On Thursday, Interim British Columbia Conservatives leader Lorne Doerkson removed Victoria-Beacon Hill candidate Joachim Agou from the election slate after the NDP exposed social media posts it called racist.
NDP candidate Amna Shah shared screenshots of Agou's past online activity, calling the comments 'horrific racism' and demanding his immediate dismissal from the campaign.
Screenshots showed Agou stating a car 'should have reversed' over pro-Palestine protesters; Doerkson pledged an investigation before ejecting the candidate about 90 minutes later.
Doerkson stated the posts 'cannot be tolerated,' confirming that if Agou were elected to Victoria-Beacon Hill, he would not sit with the Conservative caucus.
Victoria-Beacon Hill has been a safe NDP seat since 2005, and the controversy exposes vetting gaps for the Conservatives regarding Agou, a professional engineer with more than 15 years' experience.
