B.C. Attorney General Announces Chronic Property Offenders Program
The initiative will place 12 hubs across the province to increase supervision and support for repeat offenders, officials said.
- On June 23, Deputy Premier and Attorney General British Columbia Niki Sharma announced a $16 million Chronic Property Offending Intervention Initiative targeting repeat property offenders across 12 provincial hubs over two years.
- Modeled after the Repeat Violent Offending Intervention Initiative, the CPOII circles individuals with support teams to provide quicker responses and directed mental health resources; Sharma explained the earlier program had lessened police calls.
- Each hub, led by a dedicated coordinator, will expand supervision to communities including Vancouver, Surrey, and Kelowna, reducing street disorder and crimes targeting local businesses.
- The Supreme Court warned on April 30 that criminal trials at 11 locations, including Prince Rupert and Terrace, may face delays; Sharma said officials are seeking creative solutions to house in-custody accused individuals.
- Sharma recently marked the five-year anniversary of the Virtual bail pilot project in the North, which now operates province-wide to help courts operate more efficiently without requiring judges to travel.
