Governor Douye Diri left the Peoples Democratic Party for the ruling All Progressives Congress to strengthen peace and foster development in Bayelsa State, officials said.
- On Sunday, Diri announced he left the PDP for the APC at the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day, his first public comment since resigning on October 15.
- Framing the move, Diri said somebody had to take the decision and he took it on behalf of the state, arguing critics might not understand now but will see the reasons later.
- Pointing to governance, Diri noted his administration completed uncompleted projects and introduced new ones, and he welcomed different political leaders at the Thanksgiving service, stressing Bayelsa State's unity is crucial for development.
- The governor insisted politics should be a tool for development rather than harm, and his administration pledged to continue uniting Bayelsa for peace and development.
- He urged residents of Bayelsa State to imbibe the culture of thanksgiving, citing peace and security in Bayelsa alongside ongoing development as reasons to thank God.
