Barcelona Director Deco Explains Why the Club Signed Anthony Gordon Ahead of Marcus Rashford This Summer
Deco said Gordon’s energy and style matched Hansi Flick’s plans better, as Barcelona spent more than 80 million euros on the Newcastle winger.
On Thursday, Barcelona sporting director Deco explained the club chose Anthony Gordon over Marcus Rashford because Gordon's energy and playing style better fit head coach Hansi Flick's tactical vision.
Deco noted Barcelona's energy dropped last season when Raphinha was unavailable, prompting the club to pursue a high-energy replacement to address that critical weakness.
Barcelona declined a £30.3m option to sign Rashford permanently after his 12-month loan, instead spending $81.3m to acquire Gordon from Newcastle United this summer.
Deco also addressed failed pursuits, revealing a Bernardo Silva deal collapsed over playing time while Barcelona's $116m offer for Julián Álvarez was rejected after Atlético Madrid showed no desire to negotiate.
Regarding individual awards, Deco touted Lamine Yamal as the Ballon d'Or favorite but questioned the exclusion of Raphinha and Pedri from the 30-player nominee list announced earlier this week.
