Tariffs and ageing population threaten economy, Bank chief warns

Labour’s hopes for growth have been dealt a blow after the governor of the Bank of England warned that tariffs and an ageing population posed major threats to the economy. In a bleak assessment of Britain’s economic prospects before the spring statement on Wednesday, Andrew Bailey said a 15-year stagnation in productivity was dragging down living standards and that there were “strong headwinds” against growth.
