News24 | Home Affairs Breakthrough: Banking Apps to Offer ID, Passport Applications
The Department of Home Affairs partners with Capitec and FNB to increase Smart ID and passport access from 30 to 1,000 branches by 2029, reducing queues and modernizing services.
- On Monday, Minister of Home Affairs Dr Leon Schreiber announced Capitec Bank and First National Bank will deliver Smart ID and passport services via banking apps and branches.
- Failing to scale effectively, the original system relied on costly duplication of Home Affairs staff and hardware inside branches, hindering service reach in urban and rural areas.
- More than 570,000 Smart IDs and passports have been issued through 30 branches across five banks, according to the collaboration.
- The new model aims to eliminate long queues and reduce travel for Home Affairs services, phasing out the vulnerable Green ID book.
- Beginning with 10 branches and rising to 100 by early 2026, services will soon be available via the FNB Banking App or DHA’s online booking system in the coming months.
