DHAKA DISTRICT, DHAKA DIVISION, JUL 20 – The five-year MoU locks in annual imports of 700,000 metric tons of U.S. wheat to support Bangladesh's food security and reduce its $6 billion trade deficit with the U.S.
- On July 20, 2025 in Dhaka, Bangladesh's Ministry of Food and U.S. Wheat Associates signed a MoU to import 700,000 tonnes of U.S. wheat annually for five years.
- Amid looming tariffs, Bangladesh struck the deal to secure relief, as Washington plans a 35% levy from August 1.
- Officials hope the pact will help narrow Bangladesh's US$6 billion trade deficit, diversify supplies as imports reach around 7 million tonnes annually from the Black Sea, and incorporate U.S. wheat for blending.
- At the signing ceremony, Ali Imam Majumder said the agreement ensures a steady supply of high-quality wheat and strengthens trade ties, while Joe Sowers said `This step reflects our willingness to build mutual trust and deepen economic cooperation with the United States`.
- Ahead of the last week of July talks, Bangladesh prepares for negotiations in Washington next week to seal a reciprocal tariff agreement before the new rates take effect.
