- Gov. Kim Reynolds recently signed House File 2635, banning prior authorizations for emergency care and cancer screenings to remove bureaucratic red tape delaying needed health care.
- Rep. Austin Harris, R-Moulton, championed the legislation to combat provider burnout and improve physician recruitment at UnityPoint Health and MercyOne amid Iowa's medical provider shortage.
- Delays from prior authorizations can take 21 to 28 days, according to Dr. Wendy Woods-Swafford, a pediatric hematologist oncologist at UnityPoint, who said such waits are "unacceptable in the world of medicine for delaying treatment unnecessarily."
- Starting Jan. 1, the law mandates insurance reviews be conducted by specialists in the same field and restricts artificial intelligence, ensuring "clinical decisions are going to be validated in real time by people."
- Wellmark Blue Cross and The Federation of Iowa Insurers stated their members already support cancer screenings consistent with The National Cancer Institute guidelines and do not require prior authorizations for emergency services.
