Bahrain spy agency officer is sentenced to life over in-custody death
Investigators concluded the unidentified officer was responsible after bruises, burns and cuts were found on Mohamed al-Mousawi's body, rights groups said.
On Tuesday, a Bahrain court sentenced a National Intelligence Service officer to life in prison for the in-custody death of a man arrested during the Iran war.
The victim, 32-year-old Shiite Muslim Mohamed al-Mousawi, died after detention; his body was returned to his family bearing bruises, burns, and cuts, witnesses at his funeral reported.
A forensic expert with Physicians for Human Rights told The Associated Press that injuries on Al-Mousawi matched descriptions of blunt force trauma and torture.
The Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy on Tuesday called the life sentence inadequate, demanding further transparency regarding the officer and circumstances surrounding Al-Mousawi's death.
Hosting the Navy's Fifth Fleet, The Sunni-ruled, Shiite-majority nation of Bahrain faces scrutiny as the government has characterized protesters as Iranian proxies throughout the conflict.
