NASA's Roman Space Telescope Launches with BAE Systems-Built Scientific Instruments
BAE Systems built Roman’s Wide Field Instrument, which will survey the sky up to 1,000 times faster than Hubble, the company said.
- On Sunday, August 30, NASA launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, with BAE Systems providing critical scientific instruments for the new flagship observatory.
- BAE Systems developed the Opto-Mechanical Assembly for the Wide Field Instrument, providing the stable structure and thermal environment required to meet mission performance standards.
- The Wide Field Instrument offers a field of view at least 100 times greater than the Hubble Space Telescope, allowing scientists to survey the sky up to 1,000 times faster, said Bonnie Patterson, vice president of Civil Space.
- Roman will study billions of cosmic objects to explore galaxy formation and exoplanet demographics, while Patterson noted the observatory provides "unparalleled views of the cosmos" advancing knowledge of the universe.
- Contributing to future astrophysics, BAE Systems is supporting the Habitable Worlds Observatory concept, an early-stage mission designed to image Earth-like planets orbiting distant stars for signs of life.
