Texas Hits Record 14.4M Jobs in May, Outpacing National Growth
Texas added 98,000 jobs over the year, and construction posted its 22nd straight month of the fastest major-industry growth, state data show.
- On Friday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced the state added 17,800 jobs in May, pushing total nonfarm employment to a record 14.4 million as Texas continued outpacing national annual growth.
- Abbott attributed the growth to pro-business policies and regulatory environment. Texas added 98,000 jobs over the past year at a 0.7 percent annual rate, outpacing the national rate of 0.3 percent.
- The Trade, Transportation, and Utilities industry added 7,100 jobs, while Leisure and Hospitality added 3,900. Texas Workforce Commission Chairman Joe Esparza said the gains reflect opportunities for Texas' "highly skilled workforce."
- Texas' civilian labor force grew by 6,800 to nearly 15.9 million in May. The state's not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.3 percent, higher than the national rate of 4.1 percent.
- Abbott highlighted more than $7 million in Texas Talent Connection grants awarded this week to 27 job-training programs. Texas recently received its 13th Gold Shovel Award for attracting major business investment projects.
