Babysitter Arrested in Drowning Death of 3-Year-Old in Prairieville
Investigators said surveillance showed two children were left unsupervised near the pool, and Johnson faces up to 10 years in prison.
Joann Johnson, 37, turned herself in to the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Department on Wednesday after detectives issued an arrest warrant for negligent homicide in the May 18 drowning death of 3-year-old Ian Catellanos.
Using surveillance video, detectives learned that two children in Johnson's care played unsupervised near the backyard pool for about 20 minutes before the drowning, according to the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office.
Deputies responded to a 911 call on May 18, performing CPR before Air Med transported the boy to Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital, where he died.
Operating an unlicensed in-home daycare, Johnson faces two to 10 years in prison under Louisiana law if convicted; her bond was set at $100,000 and she is booked into the Ascension Parish Jail.
The National Drowning Prevention Alliance reports that nearly 70 percent of child drownings occur during non-swim times, urging caregivers to ensure pools have fencing and safety barriers.
