Baby Dies After Georgia Police Chase Ends in 10-Car Interstate Crash
The Audi driver was going about 110 mph in a 60 mph zone, and investigators said 10 vehicles were involved in the crash.
On Saturday night, a high-speed police chase on Interstate 20 in DeKalb County ended in a 10-vehicle crash, killing 7-month-old Kalayia Tolbert and fleeing driver Cameron Gabriel Kemp.
Georgia State Patrol troopers spotted Kemp's Audi speeding at 110 mph in a 60 mph zone on the "darkened interstate" with headlights off while "recklessly weaving through traffic." When the trooper activated emergency lights, Kemp briefly stopped before accelerating away.
Investigators determined Kemp was driving on a suspended license with two active arrest warrants—one for probation violation and another for failure to appear in court—and had prior incarceration with the Georgia Department of Corrections for aggravated battery.
Troopers immediately rendered medical aid at the scene; the Georgia State Patrol's Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is investigating the crash. Two other infants from one vehicle were transported to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
Addressing the incident, the Georgia Department of Public Safety acknowledged that high-speed pursuits "raise serious concerns," but stated that drivers traveling at extreme speeds without lights on dark roads present an immediate danger to the public.
