Avalanche safety equipment was used by all five snowmobilers, but natural conditions caused burial and death, despite rapid CPR and a large rescue response.

  • On Jan. 5, an avalanche near Johnson Peak and Castle Peak in Truckee buried Chris Scott Thomason, 42, of Bend, OR, and search-and-recovery operations concluded that evening.
  • A group of five experienced snowmobilers left Johnson Canyon and reached Castle Peak, including three visitors from Bend, OR and two locals with an off-duty Truckee Fire medic.
  • Fellow riders who tracked the beacon dug Chris Scott Thomason out within minutes, and an off-duty Truckee Fire medic led CPR while Good Samaritans assisted, but he did not survive.
  • Nevada County agencies and volunteer teams responded with SnoCats and search teams, and the Sheriff’s Office thanked nearly 50 individuals while mutual aid helicopter support was unavailable.
  • Officials warned further avalanche activity remains possible, advised recreationists to avoid the area, said an update will be provided, and pointed to the Sierra Avalanche Center for preparedness.
