Avalanche Search for Offseason Answers After Vegas Ends Presidents' Trophy-Winning Season with Sweep
Vegas limited Colorado to 7 goals in the series and will return to the Stanley Cup Final for the third time in nine NHL seasons.
On Tuesday night, the Vegas Golden Knights completed a 4-0 series sweep of the top-seeded Colorado Avalanche with a 2-1 victory, advancing to the Stanley Cup Final for the third time in their nine years in the NHL.
Colorado's dominant regular season saw the Avalanche tie for sixth-highest points by a Presidents' Trophy winner with 121 points, ranking first in goals per game and goals-against , before Vegas's swarming defense neutralized their trademark speed in the conference final.
Offensive star Nathan MacKinnon finished the series without a goal despite leading the Avalanche with 15 playoff points, while Colorado managed only seven goals all series and went 1 for 10 on the power play against Vegas.
Coach Jared Bednar said the Avalanche ran into "a really good hockey team" and didn't find enough solutions, while forward Logan O'Connor said the loss "feels like a waste" after the team's training camp mantra of "Cup or bust."
The Avalanche became the seventh seed in league history to be swept in a best-of-seven series according to NHL Stats, with Bednar's future a social media topic after one year remained on his contract and roster decisions pending on 41-year-old defenseman Brent Burns.
