Availability of desk space unclear as feds boost in-office time for public servants
Public servants must increase office attendance to at least four days weekly from July despite unresolved issues with desk availability and aging federal buildings, PSPC said.
- On Feb. 17, 2026, Public Services and Procurement Canada said executives must be in the office full-time in May, others four days weekly starting in July, but space availability is unclear.
- Since 2020 the public service has grown by more than 57,000, while Ottawa has been trying to off-load office space under Budget 2024, which aims to reduce the stock by 50% over 10 years.
- Unions warned the Public Service Alliance of Canada that a desk shortage will worsen as in-office time increases, with employees needing to sign up a month in advance, according to Sylvain Routier.
- Treasury Board plans to engage with unions on seating and safety, while Liberal MP Bruce Fanjoy urged reconsideration and the department said its office-reduction target will be adjusted.
- Aging infrastructure and deferred non-critical work mean PSPC prioritized repairs amid more than 960 pest incidents and 58 per cent of Crown-owned office buildings assessed as being in fair or better condition by March 2025.
