- Signed by six major trade associations representing General Motors, Toyota, Ford and Tesla, the letter argues allowing domestic Chinese production would "undermine fair competition and jeopardize the progress" the administration has made preventing "Chinese dominance in key industries."
- Currently, Chinese vehicles are largely restricted by steep tariffs and an early 2025 regulation imposed by former President Joe Biden's administration, which banned connected vehicle systems to prevent sensitive driver data collection.
- Taiyi Sun, an associate professor of political science at Christopher Newport University, said the situation creates a "paradox" for the United States as policymakers balance trade detente against preventing "Chinese dominance in key industries.
