Authorities say 10 Nigerian police officers were killed in gunbattle with rebels in the north
Police said two civilians and 17 suspected bandits also died as officers pursued the armed group after intercepting its movement.
- On Monday, a gunbattle in the Rafin Makuku axis of Kebbi State left 10 police officers and two civilians dead, according to police spokesperson Bashir Usman.
- Earlier, the Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA launched airstrikes against an armed group detected moving from the Sangeko Gap in Zamfara toward the Makuku area of Kebbi, acting on intelligence regarding the group's inter-state movement.
- Personnel of the 44 Police Mobile Force, Abuja, accounted for the 10 deaths, while Usman confirmed at least 17 suspected bandits were killed during the encounter.
- Security forces are continuing operations against fleeing members of the armed group, while the police command is supporting families of the deceased and caring for the two injured officers.
- Some reports estimated the group comprised more than 200 armed men, though authorities have not publicly confirmed this figure, and it remains unclear whether the airstrikes occurred before or after the deadly confrontation.
