Screening of new students at Mahasarakham University revealed over 4,000 cases of liver fluke infection. Meanwhile, the governor ordered the Provincial Public Health Office to urgently inspect somtum (papaya salad) restaurants and other eateries after finding that younger generations frequently consume fermented fish sauce (plara), which may be contaminated with raw fish containing parasites.
Mr. Chawalit, the owner of a somtum (papaya salad) shop in Kham Riang Subdistrict, Kantharawichai District, Maha Sarakham Province, which is near Maha Sarakham University, said that friends shared the news with him.
The Minister of Public Health recommends eating cooked food and campaigns against consuming raw food after a student contracted liver fluke infection from eating uncooked fermented fish papaya salad. The number of bile duct cancer patients in Thailand remains high. (July 7)
