How Retiring Magpies Great Found His Balance
Sidebottom ends a 373-game career with two premierships, two best-and-fairest awards and an All-Australian selection.
On Thursday, dual Collingwood premiership player Steele Sidebottom announced he will retire at the end of the 2026 season, concluding an 18-year career with the Magpies.
Since his 2008 debut, Sidebottom has played 373 matches, securing premierships in 2010 and 2023. He and teammate Scott Pendlebury hold the VFL/AFL record for 339 games played together.
The 35-year-old earned All-Australian honors and the 2018 Gary Ayres Medal, while winning Collingwood's Copeland Trophy in 2017 and 2018. Individual accolades define his tenure.
Coach Craig McRae praised Sidebottom's professionalism and character, calling his contribution to Collingwood enormous. With the Magpies guaranteed finals qualification, he hopes for a successful farewell.
The announcement follows Richmond midfielder Dion Prestia calling time on his career Thursday. Meanwhile, Scott Pendlebury weighs his future after breaking the VFL/AFL games record in May.
