Australia’s Origin Energy probes potential unauthorised data access
Origin said it notified Australian authorities and is working with forensic investigators after claims that 2 million customer records were accessed.
- On Wednesday, Origin Energy launched an urgent investigation into a potential security incident that "may have" affected personal details of some of its 4.7 million Australian customers.
- An alleged hacker claims to have access to details of 2 million Origin Energy customers, providing The Australian a sample of 50 records containing names, addresses, and bill history.
- Origin notified the Australian Cyber Security Centre and the Australian Federal Police of the incident, and engaged the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, stating it does not believe credit card or bank details were accessed.
- Following the news, Origin shares fell more than 2 per cent as the company acknowledged the incident "may raise concerns" for its customers.
- This incident follows mass breaches at Optus and Medibank in 2022 and a cyber attack last week targeting Partnered Health, underscoring persistent cybersecurity vulnerabilities for major companies across Australia.
