First Australian-made rocket crashes after 14 seconds of flight in a failed attempt to reach orbit
BOWEN ORBITAL SPACEPORT, NORTH QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA, JUL 30 – The Eris 1 rocket flew for 14 seconds with 23 seconds of engine burn before crashing, marking a key milestone for Australia's sovereign space capability, Gilmour Space said.
- On July 30, Gilmour Space conducted the inaugural flight of its Eris 1 rocket, the first to be designed and built in Australia, launching it near Bowen in Queensland with the goal of reaching orbit.
- The launch followed 18 months of preparation and delays due to weather and technical setbacks, as Australia sought to rebuild sovereign launch capability after 50 years.
- Eris 1’s four first-stage engines started firing and continued for 23 seconds, but the rocket only lifted off for 14 seconds before losing thrust, veering off course, and ultimately crashing and detonating near the launch site.
- Adam Gilmour said, "Got off the pad, I am happy," and the Australian Space Agency head congratulated the team, noting valuable flight data was gained despite the crash.
- Officials expect lessons from this flight to advance Gilmour and Australia's space ecosystem, fostering new innovation and economic opportunities in the sector.

Swedish Lovable is being touted as the world's fastest-growing software company. But behind the success figure lies a measure without transparency – which one researcher describes as "shaky".
The first rocket manufactured and launched by an Australian aerospace company crashed after 14 minutes of flight. Twenty-three meters (75 feet), the Eris rocket was meant to reach orbit, becoming the country's first orbital launch in 50 years and the first in the entire history of local production.Read more]]>
In the long run, Eris must be the first rocket designed in Australia to be sent to low orbit. But for now, it does not fly very high.
