Jobless Rate Steady to Start 2026
Full-time jobs increased by 50,000 while part-time roles fell by 33,000; real wages declined as wage growth lagged behind 3.8% inflation, ABS data showed.
- On Thursday, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said the unemployment rate remained at 4.1 per cent in January while employed people rose by nearly 18,000, with full-time jobs up 50,000 and part-time down 33,000.
- After the RBA's early-February decision, three of the big four banks forecast a 4.10 per cent hike at May 5, with Harry Murphy Cruise saying `On its own, this strength doesn't justify additional tightening beyond the hike we expect in May`.
- Wage and underemployment data show seasonally adjusted wages rose 3.4 per cent year-on-year to December but trailed 3.8 per cent inflation, with underemployment at 5.9 per cent and youth underemployment at 14.8 per cent.
- Analysts conclude that EY's Cherelle Murphy warned the RBA will raise the cash rate further, most likely in the first half of this year, and Mark Jocum said the jobs figures could bolster the case for more rate rises in the coming months.
- Participation figures show the participation rate of 66.7 per cent was 0.6 percentage points lower than January 2025's record high, ahead of inflation figures due later in February.
