Australia Launches First America's Cup Challenge for 25 Years
Backed by the Winning family and led by Grant Simmer, the challenge aims to end Australia’s 25-year absence from the event.
On Thursday, Team Australia officially launched its bid for the 38th America's Cup in Naples, Italy, marking the nation's first entry into the historic sailing competition in more than 25 years.
The Royal Prince Edward Yacht Club issued a formal notice of challenge to the New Zealand Yacht Squadron, ending Australia's quarter-century absence since the Young Australia syndicate competed in the 2000 edition.
Backed by the Winning family, the campaign appointed Grant Simmer as CEO, with Olympic gold medallist Tom Slingsby leading sailing and three-time America's Cup winner Glenn Ashby overseeing performance and design.
New regulations require at least one female sailor in each crew for the first time, while the team will use "modern engineering and design tools" to prepare the AC75 yachts for competition.
Slingsby expressed pride in "the beginning of this new chapter for Australian sailing," aiming to replicate John Bertrand's 1983 crew that broke the United States' 132-year winning streak in the America's Cup.
