Australia and New Zealand could follow Canada in becoming "associate members" of the European Union, the president of the European Parliament has suggested.
European Commission President von der Leyen's proposal on September 16 to open the door for Canada to become the 'first associate member' sparked controversy after Trump reacted with a 'hostile act'. MEP Saeidi, however, stated that establishing a new legal status would take years and that cooperation needed to be deepened rapidly.
French President Emmanuel Macron endorsed on Sunday a proposal for Canada to become the first associate member of the European Union, meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in order to deepen strategic links in trade, defence, energy and space.
