Hundreds Recognised in Australia Day Honours List

A backlog of 6000 nominations has caused a gender disparity in the Australia Day awards, with about two-thirds of the recipients being men and one-third women.
An independent review led by Dr. Vivienne Thom recommended changing the nomination assessment process to assess nominations in strict order of receipt unless exceptional circumstances apply.
Minister Patrick Gorman stated that the government is investing in campaigns to encourage nominations of women and called the gender imbalance 'unacceptable.'
Advocacy group Honour A Woman, co-founded by Carol Kiernan, stated that funding alone will not be enough for real change in gender parity in the honours system.
