Australia begins sweeping public inquiry probing antisemitism after Bondi Beach killings
The inquiry will investigate antisemitism’s causes, security failings, and social cohesion, with an interim report due April 30 and a final report by the attack’s first anniversary.
- On Tuesday, a wide-ranging federal inquiry began into antisemitism following the Dec. 14 massacre at Bondi Beach, with Virginia Bell, Royal Commissioner, to report by the end of April.
- Against a backdrop of rising reports since 2023, antisemitism and Islamophobic behaviour increased markedly in Australia, with fewer than 120,000 Jews in the population of 28 million.
- Senior Counsel Assisting Richard Lancaster said commission staff include lawyers, analysts and researchers managing evidence, and have issued dozens of notices to government agencies.
- The interim report will examine interaction between federal and state agencies and organisers of the Hanukkah celebration and recommend measures for law enforcement, border control, immigration and security agencies, including reviewing security at Jewish places of worship, education and cultural facilities.
- Cautioning against prejudicing court proceedings, Bell said completing a final report by the massacre’s first anniversary is a 'matter of critical importance' and the trial of accused Naveed Akram will lead evidence of the attack after alleged shooter Sajid Naveed was shot dead by police.
