Aussie Herbert hangs tough in $5.5 million LIV Golf win
Herbert overcame illness and a late charge from Sergio Garcia to win by four shots and claim a $US4 million prize and U.S. Open berth.
On Sunday, Australian Lucas Herbert secured his maiden LIV Golf League title at LIV Golf Virginia, finishing at 24-under with a final-round 3-under 69 to defeat Sergio Garcia by four shots at Trump National.
Despite feeling unwell at the start of the week, Herbert maintained his wire-to-wire lead after opening with rounds of 64-63 to build an eight-shot advantage before Thursday's start.
Following a 22-minute rain delay and a double-bogey on the ninth hole, Herbert regained composure, holing a testing 12-foot putt on the 11th to secure breathing room against Garcia.
Ripper GC teammates celebrated on the 18th green as the 30-year-old earned a $US4 million winner's cheque, completing a full set of LIV Golf individual victories for the all-Australian outfit.
Qualifying for next month's US Open at Shinnecock Hills, Herbert will make his first appearance in three years. "Probably that I can perform pretty damn well when things aren't perfect," he said.
