4.8-Magnitude Quake Rocks Sth East
Geoscience Australia reported a 4.8 magnitude earthquake near the South Gippsland town of Leongatha just after 2am on Saturday, striking at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres and rattling Melbourne and regional Victoria.
Hadi Ghasemi, a geophysicist with Geoscience Australia, described it as one of the strongest tremors in the region for at least two decades, noting "the shaking was widely felt" but he does not expect major damage.
More than 17,000 Victorians reported feeling the earthquake, with residents sharing experiences on social media; one Leongatha resident described the sound as a "huge explosion nearby," adding "the house shook" and there was a "booming noise."
Geoscience Australia confirmed a 3.1 magnitude aftershock struck near Leongatha just before 3am, while the Victorian State Emergency Service advised residents that no action is required and to call 132 500 for emergency assistance if needed.
Australia records around 100 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or more annually despite being geologically stable; this event follows a 5.9 magnitude quake that damaged properties in Melbourne in September 2021.
