How the severe drought will impact Swiss National Day celebrations this year
August 1st is traditionally celebrated with firework displays, bonfires, and barbecues. But this year the festivities will be scaled down due to continued drought and the risk of wildfires in most parts of Switzerland.
Miles, hoards, Rüschlikon and Stäfa hold on to their fireworks, which are burned on ships on the lake.
In addition to the drought, the voters could also ensure that loud fireworks are a thing of the past. While the supporters of the fireworks initiative are upgrading, the opponents are desperately looking for allies.
Gérardmer City Hall announced on Wednesday night that it was canceling the fireworks planned on the lake on August 14th. A decision made due to the "exceptional conditions of drought" and the "significant increase in the risk of fire".
The heat wave also runs through the National Day, before which there may be violent thunderstorms. Peter Wick advises organisers to have a plan B ready for August 1st.
The municipality and the festival committee have decided to cancel the fireworks display scheduled for Sunday, August 2nd. This is a precautionary measure in the context of drought and a high risk of fire.
