Senegal Coach Banned, Fined over Cup of Nations Final Fracas
Senegal coach Pape Thiaw banned for five matches and federations fined over $900,000 for unsporting conduct and disruptions during the AFCON final, CAF said.
- CAF on Wednesday announced a five-match ban for Senegal coach Pape Thiaw, citing `unsporting conduct` and `bringing the game into disrepute` during the AFCON final in Rabat earlier this month.
- During the final in Rabat, a disallowed Ismaila Sarr goal and a penalty awarded to Morocco sparked protests, while TV footage showed Pape Thiaw gesturing as most players walked off before returning.
- Senegalese players Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr received two-match bans, and the Senegal Football Federation was fined USD 615,000 for various offences during the final.
- CAF clarified that Pape Thiaw will be barred from the dugout for five of the six 2027 AFCON qualifying matches, and the suspended players will miss the first two AFCON qualifiers.
- The Royal Moroccan Football Federation was fined USD 200,000 for stadium ball boys stealing towels, and an additional USD 100,000 for invading the VAR review area and obstructing the Congolese referee.
