Man Dies While in Custody of Police, Prompting Investigation

On the night of June 24, Baltimore police detained a man who appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis near the intersection of West Franklin and North Franklintown, and he was later pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after 3 a.m. the following morning.
While waiting for EMS to arrive, the man lost consciousness, leading officers to transport him to a hospital themselves after emergency services had not appeared by 10:30 p.m.; following these events, the Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division launched a probe into the incident.
This incident is the third death involving Baltimore police in about two weeks, including a June 17 police shooting of Bilal ‘BJ’ Abdullah Jr. and the June 25 fatal shooting of a 70-year-old woman who attacked officers with a knife.
Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley stated, "Too many of them end up with the use of force," while also noting officers have been trained well to de-escalate such situations amid a nationwide behavioral health crisis.
The AG's office continues to investigate both incidents following police shooting protocols and will release body-worn camera footage according to Baltimore Police Department and IID policies.
