Attorney general candidates trade blows in fiery NY1 debate
Letitia James defended her handling of the Cornell rape investigation as Saritha Komatireddy attacked her record and public-safety priorities.
On Thursday, Incumbent New York Attorney General Letitia James and Republican challenger Saritha Komatireddy held their first and only debate before the Nov. 3 election, with the Cornell University rape investigation dominating the contentious exchange.
Governor Kathy Hochul appointed James as special prosecutor in the Cornell University rape investigation last week, drawing scrutiny over James's earlier comments expressing solidarity with the alleged victim.
Komatireddy attacked James's legal background, stating, "She's never prosecuted a criminal case in her whole career," and alleged James "screwed this one up by prejudging it" regarding the Cornell investigation.
Defending her record, James argued her office focuses on civil matters and stated, "Those comments demonstrate empathy," while committing to an investigation "based on the facts and based on the evidence."
With the election approaching on Nov. 3, Komatireddy claimed James is a "political hack" using taxpayer money for politics, while James accused Komatireddy of "auditioning for another position" by refusing to criticize the administration.
