Athletics: 2-time defending champ Aoyama Gakuin Univ. leads Tokyo-Hakone ekiden
Two-time reigning overall champion Aoyama Gakuin University won the outbound route of the annual two-day Tokyo-Hakone collegiate ekiden road relay on Friday, setting a record time to take an 18-second lead over second-placed Waseda University.
The final day of the 102nd Tokyo-Hakone Round-Trip College Ekiden was held on the 3rd, with 21 teams participating, including 20 schools in the Kanto region and the Kanto Student Union, which participated as an open team, in the 5-section 109.6 km return leg. In the previous tournament, Juntendo University, which was 7 seconds short of the 10th place seeded zone, rose three places from 6th place on the outward leg to finish in 3rd place.
The 102nd Tokyo-Hakone Round-Trip College Ekiden (Hakone Ekiden) saw its first leg (starting in front of the Yomiuri Shimbun building in Otemachi, Tokyo, and finishing at Lake Ashi in Hakone-machi, Kanagawa, covering 107.5 km over five stages) on the 2nd.
