At least two killed, three injured as Lyari sees second building collapse this month
LYARI NEIGHBORHOOD, KARACHI, JUL 17 – The roof collapse in Lyari killed two sisters and injured their daughters, highlighting 588 hazardous buildings in Karachi, with 59 deemed extremely dangerous, officials said.
- In Lyari’s Khadda Market area, police officials said the roof of a six-storey residential building collapsed on Thursday, killing two women and injuring three daughters.
- Despite repeated warnings, Karachi’s old residential areas harbour many unsafe buildings, Local government minister Saeed Ghani said 107 in Lyari were slated for evacuation, and the Sindh government suspended the SBCA director-general.
- Rescue authorities said the sixth-floor roof crashed onto the fifth then fourth floor, teams worked for nearly 50 hours and transferred victims to Civil Hospital Karachi.
- In response, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah expressed deep sorrow, ordered immediate structural assessments and called for a thorough investigation with a detailed report from the Karachi commissioner.
- Sindh government has ordered a province-wide survey of dangerous buildings, district committees include technical experts, and the city administration will vacate and demolish 68 highly dilapidated structures in phase one.
