At least nine soldiers killed in ambush attack in Nigeria's Borno state, sources say

- On Sunday, a military convoy near Bindundul village struck a buried bomb about 20 kilometres from Kareto, killing about nine Nigerian soldiers and seriously injuring several others.
- Residents said militants planted the mine that soldiers stepped on amid intensified Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province attacks in Nigeria's northeast in recent months.
- The soldiers were travelling from Maiduguri to Damasak for operational clearance when an armoured vehicle was destroyed by a mine around 1600 GMT, followed by sporadic gunfire and wounded taken to hospital.
- With no official military statement issued, local rescuers including Abba Kaka Tuja, member of the Civilian Joint Task Force, aided the wounded taken to hospital.
- Nigeria's northeast has seen intensified insurgent attacks in recent months, with ISWAP and Boko Haram escalating violence, while the United States carried out a strike against Islamic State militants last month.
