At least 33 UK nationals reported missing after flash floods, mudslides hit Nepal
Rescuers are searching for 33 British nationals, including two teenagers, as flood debris buries homes and roads and leaves hundreds missing.
- On Wednesday, a massive flash flood struck the Nepal-Tibet border near Rasuwa, leaving 33 UK nationals missing, including a 13-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy. The wall of mud and rock destroyed homes and vehicles across the region.
- The US Geological Survey said a magnitude 5.2 seismic event caused by a "glacial collapse and debris flow" triggered the disaster. An ice rock avalanche from a glacier blocked the river, releasing a sudden surge downstream.
- Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported 826 people missing, while the Nepal Tourism Board said 644 tourists are out of contact. Police have recovered 157 bodies from affected areas.
- China deployed at least 574 rescuers to the land crossing, though flood sediment is complicating rescue operations. The UK Foreign Office is working with Nepalese authorities, urging British nationals to "exercise caution in affected areas."
- Researchers in Kathmandu found glaciers across the Hindu Kush Himalaya region are melting at an accelerating rate, with ice loss rates doubling since 2000. Rising global temperatures have made extreme weather events like this increasingly frequent.
