The union said vacancy freezes and restructuring could affect 3,600 clinical posts as trusts try to close a £1.1 billion deficit.
- Research from the public services union Unison indicates at least 21,000 roles across the NHS in England are due to be cut by 2028 as health trusts struggle to balance their books.
- Efforts to meet the Government's demand for trust budgets to break even from this year are driving workforce reductions across hospital, community, and mental health services, the union said.
- Trusts are planning to reduce roles through vacancy freezes, restructuring, and reduced agency worker usage, impacting nurses and other clinical staff alongside support posts, Unison stated.

- A Department of Health and Social care spokesperson cited an extra £26 billion invested, claiming this enabled hiring 12,000 doctors, 16,000 nurses, and 8,000 mental health workers compared to July 2024.
