At Least 17, Most of Them Catholic Pilgrims, Killed in a Road Crash on a Highway in Kenya
A truck driver's failed overtaking maneuver triggered a chain collision that killed 17 people, mostly pilgrims, and injured seven others on the busy highway.
On Saturday, October 3, 2026, 17 people died in a multi-vehicle collision at Mlima Kiu along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway when a Howo Sinotruk driver attempted to overtake other vehicles early in the morning.
The Sinotruk driver allegedly failed to maintain his proper lane, ramming a Hino and triggering a chain reaction involving a Peugeot, Toyota Noah, Nissan UD, and Toyota Hiace PSV matatu.
Most of the deceased were pilgrims traveling to a prayer site in Nakuru County. Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa Martin Kivuva stated, "Let us pray for the repose of their souls."
Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital Medical Superintendent Stephen Mwangangi confirmed 17 deaths, with 14 bodies at his mortuary and three taken elsewhere; seven injured people were admitted, six later treated and discharged.
Police impounded the damaged vehicles at Salama Police Station for inspection as investigations continue. Road accidents remain a persistent problem across Africa, often attributed to excess speed and poor vehicle maintenance.
