At Least 11 Killed After Avalanche Hits Climbers in Russia’s North Caucasus
Search teams continued to look for six missing climbers as 56 rescuers worked in difficult terrain and a high avalanche risk, officials said.
- On Sunday, an avalanche struck a group of 33 climbers on Mount Mizhirgi in the Kabardino-Balkaria region, killing at least 11 people and injuring six others, according to local emergency services.
- Located in the North Caucasus, Mount Mizhirgi stands over 5,000 metres tall and is one of 12 mountains in the region reaching this height, making it a popular destination for mountaineers visiting Russia.
- More than 50 emergency workers launched a search and rescue operation, but efforts were hampered by difficult terrain and a high risk of further avalanches.
- As of 9 a.m. on Monday, 10 climbers had descended on their own, while the fate of six other climbers remained unknown, emergency services said.
- Nearby Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Russia and Europe at 5,642 metres, underscores the region's mountaineering appeal; the North Caucasus sees up to 20,000 visitors annually.
