At least 1 person has died as Texas flooding forces evacuations and high-water rescues, governor says

More than 1,300 responders rescued over 70 people as floodwaters rose more than 30 feet and forced mandatory evacuations across the region.

  • On Thursday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott confirmed at least one person has died as catastrophic flash floods inundated the Texas Hill Country. Rescuers navigated severe conditions across a region still recovering from devastating floods last year.
  • The National Weather Service reported 10 to 20 inches of rain fell over two days, overwhelming the Texas Hill Country. The area's thin soil layer covering signature limestone makes it particularly prone to flash flooding.
  • More than 1,300 personnel rescued well over 70 people from rising waters that reached 32 feet in some locations. Texas Game Wardens saved more than 40 residents, mostly in Uvalde County, as rivers breached their banks.
  • Abbott issued disaster declarations for dozens of counties while the National Weather Service placed 6 million residents under a flood watch. Forecasters urgently warned affected residents to "Move to higher ground now!"
  • The "large and deadly flood wave" is barreling down the same river where two dozen people died last summer at Camp Mystic. Resident Josiah Rodriguez noted this marks the second major flooding event in one year.
