Number of Asylum Seekers in Hotels Down 50%
More than 73,000 asylum seekers were housed in non-hotel accommodation as the Home Office said the backlog and applications also fell.

- The asylum backlog dropped 56 per cent to 40,168 people waiting for initial decisions, the lowest figure since 2019, while total asylum applications fell 21 per cent to 85,891 in the year to June 2026.
- Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood claimed the figures demonstrate her Government is "restoring control at our border and fairness to the migration system," citing record illegal working arrests and increased deportations.
- Another 13 hotels closed earlier this month, reducing total asylum support recipients by 12 per cent to 93,000 as the Government continues phasing out temporary hotel accommodation.
