Astronomers used the James Webb telescope to draw the first 3D map of the atmosphere of an exoplanet, WASP-18b. Using a technique of "spectroscopic eclipse mapping", they revealed its thermal structure, a "hot spot" where the temperature is so extreme that it breaks down the water vapour. This advance opens the way to the analysis of potentially habitable worlds.
