Astronomers create a dazzling, elaborate map of nearby galaxy in thousands of colors

CHILE, JUN 18 – Astronomers used the Very Large Telescope to capture 1,000-color images revealing 500 planetary nebulae and intense starburst activity in the Sculptor Galaxy, 11 million light-years away.

  • Using the Very Large Telescope in Chile, astronomers captured an extraordinary, colorful view of the Sculptor Galaxy , revealing intricate features across the entire galaxy.
  • To examine the galaxy's structure in detail, the team combined more than 100 individual images gathered during 50 hours of observations with the MUSE instrument.
  • The image reveals approximately 500 planetary nebulae scattered across the galaxy, allowing insight into star formation and confirming its distance of 11 million light-years.
  • Team leader Enrico Congiu noted that the Sculptor Galaxy is ideally positioned: near enough to allow detailed study of its internal features, yet large enough to observe the entire system as a whole.
  • This research, published today in Astronomy & Astrophysics, provides new data to understand galaxy complexity and star formation processes in unprecedented detail.
