Rebecca Gayheart Details Family's "State of Shock" After Eric Dane's Death

ElevenLabs created a synthetic voice for Eric Dane weeks before his death to help him communicate and support his family, aiding ALS patients with similar needs.

  • On March 11, Rebecca Gayheart told Variety that Eric Dane lent his voice to an AI restoration project in the weeks before his death, creating a synthetic voice to communicate again.
  • The restoration was intended to leave something behind for his daughters Billie, 16, and Georgia, 14, and Rebecca Gayheart said it became "sort of urgent" as Dane lost his voice.
  • Using past recordings, the AI firm ElevenLabs recreated Dane's voice with data points as little as 30 seconds, improving with 10 and 30 minutes, Gayheart said.
  • For the family, the result was Dane's daughters Billie and Georgia received a lasting piece of their father through the AI voice, while Rebecca Gayheart linked a GoFundMe campaign and continued ALS advocacy.
  • At SXSW on March 13, ElevenLabs will honor Dane’s legacy with a panel, and the company pledged services to 1 million people, about $1 billion, to expand access for terminal neurological diseases.
