Food-Borne Illness Cases Spike as Michigan Declares Outbreak
Health officials are investigating the outbreak with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but no produce grower, supplier or source has been identified.
- As of Tuesday, July 7, 2026, MDHHS reported 700 cases of the intestinal parasite Cyclospora in Michigan, yet officials have not identified a specific source for the outbreak.
- State investigators from MDARD and MDHHS are conducting interviews to pinpoint a common source, reviewing nearly 600 food histories in collaboration with public health partners.
- Thirty-Six people have been hospitalized during the outbreak, with the highest concentration of cases reported in southeastern Michigan, including Wayne, Oakland, and Washtenaw counties, according to MDHHS spokesperson Laina Stebbins.
- Symptoms like "watery diarrhea with frequent and sometimes explosive bowel movements" typically appear two to 14 days after exposure, while heating food to 158 degrees kills the parasite.
- While other states, including Ohio, are reporting infections, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated as of July 1 there is currently no evidence of a single, multistate outbreak.
