As NASCAR Cup schedule shifts to ovals, Shane van Gisbergen wants to keep improving
The defending Cup Series champion says better qualifying and fewer oval mistakes are key as the final 18 races shift to ovals.
Shane Gisbergen won the NASCAR Cup Series race at Sonoma Raceway on Sunday, marking his eighth victory in 15 career road-course starts before shifting focus to the final 18 oval-only races.
For a New Zealand native who raced exclusively on road courses until three years ago, transitioning to the Cup Series' 22 circular tracks has been a "slog to figure out." His average finish improved to 20.9 this year from 24.8 last year.
NASCAR returns to Chicagoland Speedway this weekend for the first time in seven years following a $5 million facility refurbishment. Crew chief Stephen Doran said the "last piece of the puzzle with the ovals is to qualify good."
With eight races remaining, Gisbergen sits 14th in the standings and holds a provisional Chase spot, leading Trackhouse Racing teammates Ross Chastain and Connor Zilisch in the playoff hunt.
To secure his spot in the 10-race title run among the top 16 drivers, Gisbergen must improve left-turn results after six finishes outside the top 30 on ovals this season.
