Another Six Whales Being Moved Out of Marineland, Headed to U.S. Aquariums
The transfer follows a blocked sale to China and a federal-approved plan with U.S. and Spanish aquariums as Marineland says it is running out of money.
- On Aug. 12, 2026, Marineland transported six belugas to Shedd Aquarium in Chicago and Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, using specialized slings and a police-escorted convoy to Toronto Pearson for flights.
- Facing severe financial constraints since closing in 2024, Marineland sought to relocate animals after Ottawa blocked a deal to sell 30 belugas to China, eventually receiving approval for a consortium arrangement.
- Specialized teams managed the delicate transfer, leaving 11 belugas and four dolphins at the Niagara Falls facility; Marineland called the complex operation "unprecedented," asserting it is the whales' only shot at survival.
- Marineland previously warned it would euthanize all whales without emergency federal funding, a threat that made international headlines; these rapid transfers represent the park's urgent response to financial crisis.
- Remaining animals are scheduled for transfer to SeaWorld in San Diego and Oceanografic Valencia in Spain, with the park aiming to empty the facility by month's end.
